The 'Shell Road Safety Awards' is an annual nationwide road safety awareness competition that the company has been sponsoring for eight years. The competition aims to encourage current and future generations to act as responsible drivers and passengers.
The new theme was announced at a ceremony to award the winners of Shell's Road Safety Awards 2013 at the Traffic Safety Institute in Seeb under the auspices of Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications, in the presence of Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed Al Shaibaniya, Minister of Education, Chris Breeze, Shell Country Chairman in the Sultanate of Oman, and a number of undersecretaries and senior officials.
Schools, teachers and students competed to put forward the best projects and research reports giving solutions to issues such as speeding, mobile phone usage on the road, not wearing a seatbelt, irresponsible overtaking and inappropriate safety distances.
The competition awards were presented by Dr Ahmed bin Mohamed Al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications in the following categories: School Project Award (three winners), Working Workshop (5 winners), (Students Research Award (five winners), Story Award (five winners), and finally Student drawing award from KG to 4th grade (12 winners).
The winners are : Eyad Bin Talal Al Shaiekh from AlFateh School in Northern Batinah came first in story writing classes (5-9) category ; Noor Bint Ali Al Bulushi from Om Kalthom Bint OKbah from Southern Batinah came first in classes (10-12) category for her story ‘Finale Happy Night’ ; in research category , (10-12) the first place went to Khulood Bint Mohamed AlMawaliah from Al-Amal School for her paper titled ‘Motorcycle and Highways: Problems and Solutions’ . In the field of workshops for Teachers , the prize went to Nasra Bint Said Al Yahmdih ,Amirah Bint Said Al Mishifreh and Naimah Al Suhailih from Ynabia Al Hikma School for their workshop titled ‘Call of Safety’ . The tangible projects of schools the prize won by Al-Ishraq School from Northern Batinah
This year, the number of participations was 2,348 from different governorates. These included research, workshops, child drawings and short stories.
The award will be held annually to enlighten students, parents and educators on the importance of road safety. There will be a website for the award to help spread awareness of traffic rules.
