EXCHANGING INTERNATIONAL EXPERIENCES IN SCHOOL SPORTS SYMPOSIUM

Under the auspices of HE Saad bin Mohammed Al-Martdouf Al-Saadi, Minister of Sports Affairs, and in the presence of HE Dr. Madiha bint Ahmed AL-Shaibanyia Minister of Education, the Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Human Resources Development, organizes symposium on "School Sports and Horizons of quality”. The symposium took place on Monday at the conference hall at Sultan Qaboos University.
The two-day symposium targets (300) participants, including teachers, schools’ supervisors, schools’ sports specialists. It also targets the public and private higher education institutions, the Omani Olympic Committee, the Omani Sports Associations and the Military Sports Associations.
The symposium aims at benefiting from some of the leading international experiences in developing school sports material and exchanging local and international experiences on the subject. It also seeks to provide educational environment for building and empowering the future generations, to identify the reality and the requirements and needs of the educational environment to operate at its best.
The program of the symposium reviews three issues over two days. The first one deals with school sport curriculum while the second issue seeks to discuss the professional development of school sports teachers. The last issue discusses the recent trends of designing, constructing and the employment of school sports facilities.
The opening session of the symposium included the Ministry’s speech delivered by HE Dr. Hamood Alhathi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education for Education and Curriculum, followed by a screening of a documentary film on school sport and a showcase of talented students.
Ann MacPhail, from University of Limerick delivered the main paper in the opening session. The paper is entitled “International Practices and Trends in Physical Education”. The session is followed by a tour in the accompanying exhibition.
The first session included three papers; the first paper came under the title “School Sports in Sultanate of Oman” and is presented by Badr Al Akhzami, Directorate-General of Human Resources Development. The second paper is titled “School Sports in the International Educational Programs” delivered by Amna Al Farsi, Directorate-General of Private Schools, whereas the third paper is entitled “School Sports Curriculum Development and Quality Horizons” delivered by Daoud Al Balushi, Directorate-General of Curriculum Development.
The Second session also included three papers; the first being delivered by Dr. Abdullah Al Kharousi, Directorate-General of Curriculum Development with the title “societal partnership and its Role in Supporting School Sports”. The second paper came under the title “School Sports Union” delivered by Ahmed Al Balushi, Oman Union for School Sports. Adel Al Ghuzaili, a school sports teacher in Muscat Governorate presented the third paper “Sports Library”.
The third and final session began with a paper titled “physical Activity and Health” delivered by Dr. Huda Al Saibi, Ministry of Health. The second paper came under the title “Developing Sports Facilities in Schools” presented by Riyadh Al Hinai, Directorate-General of Projects and Maintenance. The last paper is entitled “Development and Vocational Development for School Sports Teachers” delivered by Najlaa Mohammad Ibrahim, University of Nizwa.
Worth mentioning, on the side-lines of the symposium, MOE organizes an exhibition of sports equipment and tools that are already used at schools sports subject in the Sultanate.
