Oman marked the Arab Day for the Eradication of Illiteracy, celebrated annually on January the 8th.,The Ministry of Education represented by the Directorate General of Educational Programs ,the Continues Education Department organized in coinciding with this occasion a celebration in Al Saediyah School Museum last Sunday . The ceremony was under the patronage of Dr.Masooma Al Ajmi, the Minster#s Advisor for Linguistic Performance Development.
The ceremony included a speech of the Ministry of Education delivered by Salim Al Hinai,the Head of Illiteracy Eradication Section at the Continuous Education Department where he said that Illiteracy was considered as one of the obstacles faced developmental plans and programs in the developing countries which might lead to waste human energies and he added that the Illiteracy activity in the Sultanate received great attention by the specialists in the Ministry of Education since 1973 till now .Also ,he stressed that this high attention was based on the Semitic directives of HM,the Sultan Qaboos bin Saeed who sought to spread education in all areas of the Sultanate to be available for every individual at the society. AL Hinai emphasized that the Sultanate exerted a great efforts to reduce the Illiteracy percentage as a result to implement the international commitments which being adopted by the Enesco and assigned by the Sultanate such as ,"Education for all" Conference which held at Dakaar in 2000 where it recommended to reduce the illiteracy to 50% of current rates by 2015,where the Sultanate reached this percentage successfully before the year 2015.Moreover, Al Hinai continued that the Ministry established various supportive programs and projects such as the learning village project ,cooperative school and illiteracy eradication for special needed project. After that, the patron of the celebration ceremony honored the students in illiteracy classes at Muscat Governorate for their efforts and expo was opened in coinciding with the celebration which included Handicrafts made by students and projects and programs booklets from the Continues Education Department. Also the attendees watched interactive class that reflected the interaction between students and teacher in illiteracy class.
It is also to be noted that statics show the number of registered students in illiteracy eradication classes at the beginning of the academic year 2016/2017 were 6222 students and 813 teachers took the mission to teach them distributed in 570 illiteracy eradication classes ,according to the latest statistics. Also, the illiteracy continues to decrease as mentioned previously .
