The Ministry of Education, represented by the Modern Geographic Technologies Committee and the Directorate-General for Curriculum Development, organized, under the patronage of HE Prof. Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Al-Ambosaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education, a ceremony to honor student projects in modern geographic technologies for the academic year 2024/2025, at the Maani Hotel Muscat.
The event was organized to highlight the students' efforts in employing modern geographic technologies in their research projects, and to encourage educational practices that promote analytical thinking and the use of geographic information systems in studying natural and human challenges.
The ceremony included a speech by the honored students, delivered by student Maryam Al Rashidi from Al Buraimi Governorate, in which she said: “We meet today at this celebration organized by the Ministry of Education to honor the students who won with their outstanding projects in the outstanding student projects competition in employing geographic technologies. I must also express our sincere thanks and great gratitude to our teachers for the fruitful guidance they provided us in employing modern technologies and activating them in a positive way to solve some of the issues and problems that touch the reality of our local environment.”
She added: “The idea of the student projects competition in modern geographic technologies, which targets students in grades (9-12), was based on employing geographic information systems and related applications to study natural and human challenges in order to make the right decisions to address them and promote spatial citizenship. The impact of the benefit was great through what we gained from training on dealing with available spatial and digital data and statistics, and converting them into clear results, in addition to involving us in solving problems and guiding us to employ geographic technologies in various fields, including the historical aspect.”
The ceremony included honoring outstanding students, teachers, and supervisors in modern geographic technology projects for the 2024/2025 academic year, as well as recognizing outstanding sub-teams at the directorate level in the governorates. It also featured a presentation of the first edition of student projects that utilized geographic information systems (GIS) in studying historical and tourist landmarks. The event further showcased outstanding student projects and facilitated the exchange of expertise in geographic technologies and related modern applications.
Regarding the exhibition accompanying the ceremony, Dr. Khalid Al-Kalbani, a specialist in geographical maps and head of the central technical team of the Geographic Technologies Committee, said: “On the sidelines of the ceremony, outstanding student projects in geographic technologies were displayed, as the sub-teams of geographic technologies in the educational directorates in the governorates presented a group of outstanding projects in the applications of geographic information systems and Google Earth, which dealt with a group of natural and human phenomena and challenges that touch local communities. Some of these projects were distinguished by addressing the historical aspect, and this initiative comes to enhance the culture of spatial thinking and develop the skill and technical aspects in the curricula.”
