Dialogue Session to Raise Awareness of the Dangers of Smoking and E-cigarettes

The Ministry of Education, represented by the Career Guidance and Student Counseling Center, held a national dialogue session to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and e-cigarettes. The session was part of its participation in the Higher Education, Training and Qualification Exhibition (Edu Track Oman), which is organized by Al Nimr Expo Company for three days. The session, which is held under the patronage of HE Prof. Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Ambosaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education, was attended by school students at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Center.

The session began with the launch of the slogan for the awareness program on the dangers of smoking and e-cigarettes. This was followed by a video clip explaining the harmful effects of smoking and e-cigarettes and their negative impact on individuals and society. This was followed by the dialogue session presented by specialists from the Ministry of Health, the Royal Oman Police, the General Directorate for Combating Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances, and Consumer Protection.

The session included several topics: the health topic, which focused on the actual components of e-cigarettes, their impact on the respiratory system, immunity, and the risk of nicotine addiction; the legislative and legal topic, which discussed security and health risks, violations, and legal penalties; the regulatory topic, which explained how e-cigarettes and their derivatives enter the country, and the violations and penalties associated with smuggling; the consumer and commercial topic, which addressed misleading marketing directed at adolescents, the role of the Consumer Protection Authority in reducing commercial fraud, and how to submit reports and observations by the public; and the behavioral and preventive topic, which presented the Ministry of Health's experience in launching the national campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of tobacco “It’s Not Worth It” providing psychological and advisory support to smokers who want to quit, shedding light on misleading marketing methods in the e-cigarette industry, and promoting a culture of rejection and making independent health decisions.

The Ministry is also participating in an exhibition with the services and activities provided by the Career Guidance and Student Counseling Center, educational and professional consultations, answering inquiries related to choosing academic subjects and university majors, and direct meetings with students and their parents. Students also visit participating universities and colleges to learn about their majors and programs, and benefit from the educational, professional, academic experiences and international expertise that various educational institutions are participating in. Three discussion sessions will be held during the exhibition: the first titled: “New Developments in Career Guidance, which focuses on integrating future skills into education according to Oman Vision 2040,” the second titled: “Whispers of a Path,” and the third titled: “Teaching the Chinese Language.”
