The future of education depends on the ability of digital solutions to transform schools into centers of innovation. The Sultanate of Oman has sought to accelerate the implementation of its national agenda for comprehensive development, placing the education sector at the core of its comprehensive transformation to contribute to the realization of Oman Vision 2040. In translation of these trends, the Ministry of Education has worked tirelessly to develop its educational systems and infrastructure to keep pace with current developments and enhance the quality of educational outcomes. These efforts include developing internet services, building electronic systems and applications, providing interactive smart services to users in the educational field, providing smart boards, and launching a number of projects in the field of digital transformation in this vital sector.
The Ministry has assigned Oman Telecommunications Company (OmanTel), its strategic partner, the project to equip a number of government schools in various educational directorates across the governorates with more than (1,730) interactive whiteboards. This is part of its plan to provide interactive whiteboards in all schools across the governorates, which in turn represents one of the largest deployments of smart classrooms in the region. Each interactive whiteboard combines the functions of a digital whiteboard, a display screen, and a remote collaboration platform, enabling teachers to deliver multiple lessons instantly, whether in the classroom or (remotely). This technology supports handwriting recognition powered by artificial intelligence, access to cloud-based content, and the integration of multimedia, enhancing a more engaging, personalized, and comprehensive learning experience.
Among these projects is also expanding the digital infrastructure base for schools by providing high-speed internet service with a speed of up to (1) gigabit to more than (900) schools in various educational directorates in the governorates, using fiber optic networks and fifth generation (5G) technology, which ensures the availability of reliable connectivity to support cloud learning, interactive platforms, and (distance) education smoothly.
Regarding the importance of enhancing the educational process in various schools in the Sultanate of Oman, and strengthening the partnership between the Ministry of Education and private sector institutions to achieve digital transformation in these schools, Dr. Faisal Al Busaidi, Director-General of the Directorate-General of Information Technology at the Ministry, said: “The Ministry is fully committed to implementing its digital transformation plans, by developing the systems and infrastructure necessary to implement distance learning and e-learning in all schools of the educational directorates in the governorates, and that the partnership with OmanTel is part of the Ministry’s keenness to involve a number of institutions and companies within the Sultanate of Oman in achieving its digital vision.”
He added: "There is a previous partnership between the Ministry and OmanTel regarding the provision of Google Education services during the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to numerous initiatives that support the education sector. We hope this partnership will continue to support projects that serve the educational process."
Commenting on this strategic partnership, Eng. Alaa Eldin Bait Fadel, Chief Commercial Officer at OmanTel, said: “We believe that education is the foundation for comprehensive economic growth and sustainable social impact. Our partnership with the Ministry of Education reflects our commitment to empowering talent, nurturing competencies, and ensuring that every student has the tools they need to succeed. Through this partnership, we will also promote comprehensive economic growth with a real and sustainable social impact.”
Through these projects, the Ministry focuses on empowering teachers and creating a lasting impact by providing ongoing training and support. This enables teachers across the Sultanate of Oman to integrate digital tools into their daily learning process, radically changing the way education is delivered. These smart classrooms contribute to promoting digital inclusion, reducing reliance on traditional materials and mobility, expanding access to education services, and building a knowledge-based, future-ready society.
