Omani Students Ranked First Globally in the Students Scientific Research Competition of the GLOBE Environmental Program
Omani students participating in the International Student Scientific Research Competition (IVSS) of the GLOBE Environmental Program for the year 2025 won first place globally for the Near East and North Africa region, for the scientific research prepared by students: Khalfan bin Issa Al-Hussaini and Elias bin Walid Al-Sulaimani, under the supervision of teacher Aziz bin Said Al-Hadi from Said bin Nasser Al-Kindi Basic Education School in Muscat Governorate, on “Investigating the temperatures recorded by GLOBE students compared to the meteorological station in the Wilayat of Al-Amerat over the past ten years.”
The winning research idea is to collect daily temperature data between 2015 and 2024 in the Wilayat of Al Amerat using GLOBE protocols, compare them with the temperatures recorded by the Meteorological Authority, analyze the differences between them, and explore the factors that may affect these differences.
The research results revealed a slight difference in daily temperatures between the data observed by students and the weather station when compared to the same month in previous years. The research also showed that differences in locations and devices used to monitor data may lead to differences in the observed temperature data from one location to another.
It is worth noting that the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Education, signed an agreement of understanding for environmental cooperation in December 2009 with the Global Environment Program (GLOBE), a global environmental program supervised by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This program was established in 1994 and is a global educational program concerned with science and environmental education. It seeks to increase awareness among students about issues affecting the global environment, support progress in student achievement in science, mathematics, and geography, and cooperate in the field of conducting monitoring operations at the international level for the benefit of the environment program.
