The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Innovation and Science Olympiad, implemented a central training camp for students on the Nuclear Science Olympiad. The training is carried out by Professor Aman-ur-Rehman, Professor and Dean of the College of Applied Sciences at the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
The Nuclear Science Olympiad is an international competition organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to raise awareness of the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. It focuses on disseminating knowledge and understanding of nuclear science and technology (NST) to improve the nuclear scientific approach to its uses and applications, and to promote interest in NST among high school students. It also aims to stimulate student-led activities through independent and creative solutions to NST problems.
The mechanism for selecting participating students went through several stages: The first stage relied on the nomination of educational directorates in the governorates for a number of outstanding students in physics. The Ministry then implemented an online training program with the participation of more than (140) students, in cooperation with a number of national trainers. The third stage involved the Ministry implementing a central test at the Sultanate level to select (50) students from government schools. In the fourth stage, the Ministry implemented an online training program with the participation of (50) students from government schools along with (20) students nominated from private schools in Muscat Governorate. The fifth stage relied on an online elimination test to select (20) final students from government and private schools. In the sixth stage, the training was completed with Professor Aman-ur-Rehman in a central camp in Muscat Governorate for the (20) students who qualified from the elimination test in the fifth stage.
The camp focuses on solving complex problems and enhancing students' skills in dealing with them. This directly helps them prepare for the World Olympiad, through intensive training that simulates the nature of Olympiad problems and provides them with the tools necessary to achieve outstanding performance in the competition. The camp concludes with a final elimination test to select the national team that will represent the Sultanate of Oman at the 2025 World Olympiad in Malaysia.
