The Sultanate of Oman celebrates Omani Teachers Day in Appreciation and Recognition of their Pivotal Role in the Educational System

The Ministry of Education celebrates Omani Teachers' Day on February 24 of each year, embodying the role of teachers in building generations and enhancing the value of science and knowledge, under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq - may Allah protect him - the first teacher and leader of the education process in the Sultanate of Oman, who attaches great importance to the education sector and is keen to develop it in line with the requirements of the era. His Majesty's visit to Sultan Faisal bin Turki School in November last year was an embodiment of his great interest in teachers. The visit was a strong incentive for all those working in the education sector, and an affirmation of the importance of their fundamental role in building a bright future for the country. It is also a message of appreciation for the efforts of teachers who work sincerely to advance the educational process and provide quality training programs that enhance their capabilities and provide them with the necessary skills and knowledge to keep pace with global developments and advancements in various fields.

The celebration of the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Education, of Teachers' Day comes as a tribute, appreciation and confirmation of the active and continuous role and great message that the teachers play in the educational process, as they are the main driver in the educational system, and are able to instill the values ​​of citizenship, tolerance and community service in the young from the time they join school until they finish it, and direct them towards the right path to create a generation armed with knowledge, culture and awareness towards their society and country; to play their role in advancing their country in all areas of life, present and future. The number of educational bodies in government schools in the Sultanate of Oman reached (74,316) teachers and administrators, and the growth rate of the number of teachers during the five years (2020-2024) reached about (3.1) %, with an average annual growth rate equivalent to (2.65) %, while in private schools, the number of educational bodies reached (22,539) teachers and administrators in (1223) private schools.

The Omani teachers enjoy continuous attention from the Ministry by providing qualifying, training and development programs, courses, and workshops to enhance their professional and functional capabilities in accordance with the ongoing developments and transformations witnessed by the educational field. Among the most prominent things that the Omani teachers have enjoyed in the field of training and development is the establishment of the Specialized Institute for Professional Training for Teachers, the Main Training Institute and training centers in the governorates that contribute to supporting the efforts of the Omani teachers and advancing their professional and functional path. The Specialized Institute for Professional Training for Teachers offers several programs for teachers, school administrations and support jobs. During the year 2024, the number of those targeted in these programs reached (24,430), including (13,492) in strategic programs, (1,156) in central programs, (2,653) in national programs, and (7,129) in decentralized programs. The number of categories supervised by the Specialized Institute for Professional Training for Omani Teachers who hold higher degrees reached (4,250), from the categories of teachers, school administrations, supervisors, and support jobs, including (3,721) with a master’s degree, (529) with a doctorate degree.

The teachers are the first basic building block in the educational process, due to their great role in preparing generations suitable for the future. The Directorate-General of Educational Supervision has paid special attention to teachers to be qualified to deliver their lofty message, in addition to empowering the new teachers in teaching skills through programs and training sessions such as the introductory program to qualify new teachers, which is implemented through several direct and virtual training stages and is presented by an elite group of educators in various scientific and educational specializations. It also pays great attention to appreciating and promoting distinguished teachers, and caring for the rest of the teachers and supporting and assisting them, and following up on the development of their performance, and refining the scientific and educational technical skills of teachers during meetings and supervisory visits carried out by visiting teams to various educational directorates, and direct follow-ups of teachers in their schools and providing them with the necessary support and assistance on a regular basis, and disseminating scientific bulletins that enable teachers in the scientific and educational components and the developments related to them in various scientific subjects and specializations.

The Directorate-General of Educational Supervision is also keen to hold specialized forums on the subject and employ scientific research and studies to develop teachers’ performance, in order to exchange experiences between teachers by providing them with the opportunity to participate with working papers in live virtual forums. It also seeks to support outstanding teachers in presenting the “Lesson on Air” program on Oman Live Channel on Oman TV, and to provide the opportunity for teachers and senior teachers to review updated and developed books before they are approved and printed, and to adopt innovations and initiatives received from teachers, review them and circulate them to expand the scope of their benefit, and nominate outstanding teachers to participate in international conferences and forums according to specific foundations and controls.
