The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Educational Supervision, organized the Geography and Modern Technologies Forum under the title: “Geographical Skills in Light of Artificial Intelligence Applications.” The forum targeted am number of employees of the Ministry’s General Diwan, senior supervisors, supervisors, senior teachers, and teachers of social studies. The forum was held at the Durrat Al Khaleej International Private School.
The opening of the forum was patronized by Mohammed bin Ali Al Dahmani from the National Authority for Survey and Geospatial Information, in the presence of Dr. Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al Ramhi, Assistant Director of the Humanities Supervision Department, and Asma bint Ali Al Touqi, Headmaster of the school.
The forum program began with the exhibition, which included a display of geography and modern technology projects, completed by the educational directorates and government agencies participating in artificial intelligence software, which serves geography and modern technologies, in the field of drones, the environment, solar energy, and a study of the spread of a type of bird in the Sultanate of Oman using Max Moon technology, applications of geographic information systems in several fields, student projects in modern geography technologies, review of modern social studies curricula, the atlas of maps of the Sultanate of Oman, and the digital school atlas.
The forum included the presentation of two working papers. The first paper was presented by Abdullah Al-Rashdi, Operations Manager at Abbas Ibn Firnas Drone Center. The paper included an overview of the laws of unmanned aircraft in the Sultanate of Oman. The second paper was presented by Samia Al-Rashdi, Head of the Maps Section at the Geographic Information Systems and Technical Department at the Directorate-General of Technical Affairs at Muscat Municipality. The paper discussed Muscat Municipality’s experience in spatial empowerment (I’timad Platform), which is an advanced digital system to facilitate the procedures for issuing a no-objection certificate for drilling operations within Muscat Governorate.
The forum aims to enhance awareness of digital geography and the importance of modern technology in developing geography, encouraging students, teachers and supervisors to use advanced technological tools in geographic research and teaching methods, developing technical skills by enabling teachers and supervisors to acquire the skills necessary to use modern technologies, and encouraging innovation in geographic education by stimulating the educational environment to adopt innovative teaching methods based on technology; which enhances students' ability to explore complex geographic problems and solve them using scientific methods. The forum also aims at directing the attention of target groups towards the role of technology in achieving sustainable development, providing the necessary tools to understand environmental and geographic changes, and contributing to formulating effective policies to protect the environment.
