The Ministry of Education celebrated the honoring of the schools participating in the second edition of the “Green Schools” project and the launch of the third edition, under the patronage of HE Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al Amri, Chairman of Be’ah Authority, in the presence of a number of Their Excellencies and CEOs of the institutions supporting the project and a number of educational officials.
HE Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Ambosaidi, Undersecretary of Ministry of Education for Education, delivered a speech in which he thanked the supporting private sector institutions and pointed out that green schools aim to spread awareness among students and their parents about environmental challenges and provide them with the skills that enable them to be responsibly aware. They also aim to provide students with knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes towards the three aspects of sustainable development: environmental, economic, and social.
HE said: “Our green schools witnessed the implementation of the first and second versions of the Green Schools Project in the past two years, which brought about a qualitative shift and an unprecedented milestone in education. The project targeted more than (60) schools across the Sultanate, more than (4000) students, (65) teachers, and included workers in the educational field, the local community with all its individuals and various institutions. The project resulted in (65) environmental projects in schools, the fields of which vary between waste management, zero neutrality, nurseries, grey water treatment, and rationalization of electricity consumption.”
HE added: “Our students and teachers in green schools also had the opportunity to participate in national events such as participating in the Muscat International Book Fair, Oman Sustainability Week, and the “Green Path” event that was implemented in the Al Sharqiyah Sands in cooperation with Outward Bound Oman with the participation of (50) students. They also participated in workshops such as the Green Schools Humanization Workshop and its Impact on Education, in which more than (70) participants from teachers, members of the decentralized team and supporting companies participated, also reflecting modern concepts related to sustainability such as greening, hospitality and humanization.”
HE explained that the impact of the project has gone beyond the local geographical location, as it left its mark at the COP28 conference, and has become unique and competitive among the experiences of green schools at the level of Gulf and Arab experiences. The impact of the project has reached international organizations such as UNESCO, contributing to supporting many of the goals it seeks. HE also indicated that the third version of the project targets more than (50) schools from all educational governorates in the Sultanate of Oman, and includes: (11) decentralized team members, (54) teachers, and more than (3000) students.
On the sidelines of the honoring ceremony, the Ministry of Education signed (6) agreements with a number of private institutions to support the third version of the project. They were signed on behalf of the Ministry by HE Majid bin Said Al Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Administrative and Financial Affairs, with the CEOs of the supporting institutions: Oman LNG, Shell Oman, Oman Environmental Services Holding Company (Be’ah), Nama Electricity Supply, Al Batinah Energy, and Al Suwadi Energy.
