The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Humanities Curriculum Development, is implementing a training program on graded readingand independent reading. The program targets first-level teachers, first-level supervisors, curriculum specialists, and evaluation specialists.
The training program seeks to provide trainees with the skills of teaching reading, both orally and silently, by familiarizing themselves with the concepts, methods, and strategies related to these skills, and linking them to the curriculum and assessment, and enabling them to acquire the skills of diagnosing students’ levels in reading, and identifying the appropriate reading materials for them, in order to enhance their learning and their relationship to the curriculum.
On the first day of the program, participants gained general knowledge of the components of the reading learning program as an introduction to the subsequent worksheets and a basic introduction to them. Then, in the second session of the first day, the training moved to applying methods for diagnosing students in reading and its importance at the beginning of each academic year, as it is the basis for choosing the appropriate reading content for each student according to personal differences, tendencies, and abilities. On the second day, trainees learnt about strategies for learning to read aloud, silent reading through graded reading, guided reading and reaching independent reading, and how to manage reading classes, especially in the third and fourth grades through a set of training methods, individual and group interactive activities, and mini-classroom situations.
The program concludes with an explanation of the (Kutubi platform) and its role in developing reading skills, as it includes practical training to use the platform in graded reading, which will be applied experimentally in some schools in the governorates. Participants also learnt about the capabilities and how to use the Kutubi platform, in addition to acquiring a set of knowledge, skills, and trends related to the concept of reading and readability, and knowing the most prominent active learning strategies that help activate the Kutubi platform. Through training activities, participants learn about the mechanism for employing the Kutubi platform in the educational process.
The training program on graded reading and independent reading aims to explain the importance of reading in developing students’ skills, distinguish between the concepts of reading aloud and silent reading, graded reading, guided reading, independent reading, analyze the components of the reading learning program and its skills, explain the classification of story series through selected samples, and conduct a preliminary survey of students’ reading levels.
