The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning (Lifelong Learning Department), organized a celebration on the occasion of "International Literacy Day 2024", which falls on September 8 of each year. This year, the celebration came under the slogan "Promoting Multilingual Education: Literacy for Mutual Understanding and Peace", under the patronage of HE Majid bin Said Al Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry for Administrative and Financial Affairs, and in the presence of a number of Directors-General of the Ministry's General Diwan, Directors of Special Education and Continuous Learning Departments, Heads of Lifelong Learning Departments in the educational directorates in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman, and a number of employees of the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning.
Dr. Thuraiya Al Rashidi, Director-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning said: “The Sultanate of Oman has put in place many laws, programs, and plans that have played a major role in reducing the rate of alphabetical illiteracy. Thanks to these programs, the Ministry of Education was able to reduce the illiteracy rate to (2.5) of the total population and (0.5) in the age group (15-44) according to data issued by the National Center for Statistics (2023).”
She added: “As a result of the industrial revolution, the amazing scientific progress, and the technical development, modern means of communication and artificial intelligence have created fertile ground for adopting modern teaching methods, approaches, and strategies that help students in literacy classes and adult education to acquire the necessary skills from science and knowledge, and develop their capabilities to enable them to keep pace with a world characterized by rapid change and transformation in all its aspects. In this context, the Ministry of Education seeks to play an important role in the field of digital literacy by developing programs, offering sessions, and courses that help narrow the digital gap and reduce this phenomenon.”
HE the Undersecretary of the Ministry for Administrative and Financial Affairs honored the owners of the winning initiatives in the field of literacy, namely: the initiative to design and create an electronic map of the locations of the literacy classes in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate Educational Directorate, the initiative to enrich the English language booklet in the Muscat Governorate Educational Directorate, the initiative to engage in digital interactive learning in the Al ADhahirah Governorate Educational Directorate, and the initiative to enhance lifelong learning in the Al Dakhiliyah Governorate Educational Directorate, and honored the participants and contributors to the success of the ceremony.
The celebration aimed to participate with the international community in celebrating International Literacy Day, and to highlight the efforts of the Ministry of Education in eradicating illiteracy through a set of educational programs and projects provided by the Ministry to students in literacy classes, and to encourage initiatives to innovate, develop new ideas, and achieve sustainability.
