The National Forum for the GLOBE program concluded yesterday, Tuesday, at Maani Hotel, with the participation of more than (100) students, in addition to (60) teachers and supervisors of the program from various directorates affiliated with the Ministry of Education in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman. The two-day forum was patronized by HE Dr. Jokha bint Abdullah Al Shukailiya, CEO of the Omani Authority for Academic Accreditation and Educational Quality Assurance.
The national forum aimed to enhance the capabilities of supervisors, teachers, and students in applying the program’s protocols, which are: (atmosphere protocol, water protocol, soil protocol, and land cover protocol), in addition to training them on how to data entry after applying the protocols on the program’s global website. The forum also includes evaluating student research participating in the annual student research competition of the Globe program related to the environmental field. This is in preparation for the students’ participation in the program’s competitions at the international level.
At the end of the ceremony of the forum, HE the patronage of the ceremony honored the winning scientific research in the scientific research competition of the global environmental program GLOBE. The Hajj School for Basic Education from the Al Wusta Governorate won first place for its study of the effect of marine organisms’ scales on water filtration in the Hajj area in the Wilayat of Mahut in Al Wusta Governorate. The second place went to Al-Hawari bin Muhammad Al-Azdi School for Basic Education for a study on the effect of garlic in treating harmful bacteria in gray water in the North Al Sharqiyah Governorate. The third place went to Al-Zahraa School for Basic Education in the Muscat Governorate for a study on the effect of fertilizing the mesquite maritime plant on the growth of tomato and basil seedlings and soil characteristics in Muscat. Al-Wafa School for Basic Education from North Al-Batinah Governorate won fourth place for a research project on the sustainability of soil and water management using graphene oxide nanoparticles. The fifth and final place went to Al-Khawarizmi School for Basic Education for their project analyzing the growth factors of the Arjoun fungus in the Kohl area and its lack of growth in the Al-Khadra area in Al-Buraimi Governorate.
It is worth noting that the GLOBE program was established in 1994 and is a global environmental and educational program supervised by NASA. It aims to study issues related to the global environment. The Sultanate of Oman’s participation in this program came under a Memorandum of Understanding for environmental cooperation that was signed in December 2009 through the GLOBE program between the Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Education and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
