The Ministry of Education, represented by the Citizenship Department, implemented the “My School in Oman Rise” program for school students (strengthening national identity and developing citizenship values), under the patronage of Dr. Yahya Al Harithi, Director-General of Curriculum Development at the Ministry. The program comes to educate students about preserving the Omani identity and national values, preserving, and defending national gains, and acquiring the skill of community participation and volunteering.
The program aims to consolidate the concepts of national identity, citizenship values, and community participation to ensure its continuity in practice and its sustainability among students, and to urge and encourage them to practice it. The program also aims to encourage students to work on advancing their schools towards the ranks of distinguished schools aimed at practicing national values and good citizenship. It also seeks to emphasize the role of schools in consolidating the values of citizenship, enhancing the national identity of students, and raising students’ awareness of mechanisms of national identity development and citizenship values, directing them to the dangerous impact of technology and the problems associated with it in order to preserve their national identity and values.
The program focuses on a number of topics, the most important of which are: the concept, importance, and components of national identity, national values, and citizenship, and how to preserve each of these three values, educating students about the concepts of positive citizenship, the responsible citizen, and the nation’s ambassador abroad. The program also focuses on explaining the importance of these values, and their pedagogical, educational, social, and cultural role in the student’s life. The program seeks to produce “students who are responsible citizens in their community” aiming towards strengthening the student with Islamic values, from which emerge the values of citizenship, pride in the Arabic language, preserving its identity, as an eternal language that has a relationship with the student’s national identity and citizenship values, and linking the program content to the student’s environment in terms of its inclusion of current local events, and reflecting it with contemporary developments in the local context, based on the students’ interests and inclinations.
Furthermore, the program aims to guide students towards deepening and consolidating national identity through pride in the cultural achievements that the Sultanate of Oman has witnessed over the past years, and the advanced developments it is currently witnessing, and urging them to relate their contemporary reality to the progress, development, and sophistication that their country, the Sultanate of Oman, is witnessing in all fields, linking them to the Oman Vision 2040.
