The Ministry of Education celebrated yesterday (Sunday) morning the launching of the new phase of the Green Schools Project and the honoring of the participating schools in the first edition of the project. The Green Schools Project comes as one of the initiatives concerned with green education implemented by the Ministry of Education in order to achieve an encouraging educational environment that supports the transition to a sustainable society. The implementation of the project began in the selected schools in September 2023 and will continue until April 2024. The project includes two important aspects: the Sustainability curriculum, which is a guide, one for the student and the other for the teacher, that includes six important environmental topics (waste management - climate change - renewable energy - afforestation - water consumption - zero carbon neutrality), and the second aspect is the school project, which is for each school to implement a project in the school building that is among the six topics included in the sustainability curriculum.

Eng. Muhannad Al Jumaa, Director General of Bee’ah Academy, stated: “The Green Schools Project aims to create living models of a sustainable society in the school environment, through which students, teachers, and the local community can be comprehensively educated about environmental and economic issues, circular and sustainability and carrying out projects that address the themes supporting sustainability through the Green School Project Guide. Teachers and students are supported with the activities and scientific content necessary to change thinking about important global issues such as climate issues and zero carbon neutrality.”

Through this initiative, in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Oman Shell seeks to educate school students about environmental protection and raise community awareness in the sustainable management of irrigation, soil, water and plastic. Malak Al Shaibaniya, General Manager of Institutional Relations and Local Added Value at the company, states that this project contributes to raising awareness of Students, teachers and the local community to understand the concept of the circular economy, educate students and help them make informed decisions on issues related to the environment, and contribute to enhancing progress in preserving the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions to contribute to reaching carbon neutrality.

At the launching ceremony, the Ministry of Education signed a number of five cooperation agreements with Bee’ah Company, Shell Oman Company, Daleel Oil Company, the Omani Liquefied Natural Gas Company, and Vodafone Oman. The signing of these agreements comes to the funding of the Green Schools Project for the current academic year 2023/2024.
