The Ministry of Education, represented by the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning (Department of Lifelong Learning), organized on (Monday) morning a celebration on the occasion of International Literacy Day 2023, which falls on September 8th of each year, and this year comes under the slogan (Promoting literacy in a world in transition: building the foundations of peaceful and sustainable societies). The celebration was held under the patronage of HE Prof. Dr. Abdullah bin Khamis Ambosaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education, in the presence of a number of directors-general in the Ministry’s General Diwan, directors of special education and lifelong learning departments, and heads of lifelong learning departments in governorate, and a number of employees of the Directorate-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning. The celebration ceremony took place in Khasab Hall in the Ministry’s General Diwan.

Dr. Thuraiya Al Rashidi, Director-General of Special Education and Continuous Learning delivered the Ministry’s speech in which she said: “Oman Vision 2040 is based in its stated goals on comprehensive and sustainable education, ensuring that all students have access to education, and their transition through the stages of school education to higher education, leading to their involvement in the work sectors according to their levels and academic qualifications. This is the approach adopted by the Ministry of Education to be the basic translation of these goals for emerging generations or for those who did not have the opportunity for formal school education. From this standpoint, the Ministry of Education has placed the goal of education at the forefront of its strategic plans and has not hesitated to provide academic support to students for the sake of an Omani society free of illiteracy. The Ministry has achieved progress in reducing illiteracy levels in the Sultanate of Oman, as the illiteracy rate has decreased in the age group (15-44) to (0.4) according to data issued by the National Center for Statistics and Information.”

HE the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Education stated: “This celebration comes in honor of learners in the field of illiteracy for their efforts to be freed from illiteracy, and for the initiatives undertaken by provincial educational institutions, to advance learners, and as a reminder of the ongoing efforts being made in the field of eradicating illiteracy. The Ministry of Education is

working with all its capabilities in providing support and assistance to the people of the country to liberate themselves from illiteracy and has made great strides in this field. This year’s slogan speaks about sustainability and peaceful societies, and everyone, whether in formal education or education in the field of literacy, contributes to strengthening the status of this aspect and sustainability.”

The celebration included a singing segment entitled “Let’s Light the Stars” by the poet Amal bint Ahmed Al Shaqsia, in which she expressed her profound coexistence in the field of literacy, followed by a visual presentation from memory that reviewed the process of literacy in the Sultanate of Oman from the point of view of former workers in the field of literacy and adult education, as they recounted the challenges and the difficulties they faced during the course of their work and the achievements that have made. At the end of the celebration, HE honored the owners of the winning initiatives in the field of literacy from the governorates Muscat, Musandam, and Al ADhahirah, and the participants in the celebration.
