The Ministry of Education, represented by the Department of Innovation and Scientific Olympiads, concluded today (Thursday) the final training camp for students participating in the Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni International Chemistry Olympiad. The training camp lasted for six days at the Wyndham Garden Hotel Muscat.

The training camp came in preparation for the actual participation in the Abu Rayhan Al-Biruni International Chemistry Olympiad in its first edition for the year 2023, which is to be held in the city of Khwarizm in the Republic of Uzbekistan this month from 11 to 17 of June. The participating students were had intensive daily theoretical and practical training for a period of (8) hours in six days, in addition to solving global exercises and problems inspired by previous international Olympiads; to get them used to the pattern of questions in cooperation with an external trainer, in addition to the national trainers.

The mechanism for selecting the participating students went through three stages. The first stage, the educational directorates in the governorates nominated a number of excellent students in chemistry. In the second stage, the ministry implemented a training program - remotely - with the participation of more than (64) students, from the beginning of February until the beginning of May, in cooperation with an outside trainer. The third stage was the Ministry, represented by the Department of Innovation and Scientific Olympiad, implementing a central test at the level of the Sultanate to select the national team.

The Sultanate of Oman is participating with a national team comprising (4) school students in the Olympiad of Abu Al-Rayhan Al-Biruni, which is held every two years in the Republic of Uzbekistan and lasts for seven days. The Olympiad consists of two exams: one in the theoretical side and the other in the practical side. The name Abu al-Rayhan al-Biruni was chosen for this Olympiad in appreciation of the active role in chemistry played by the scientist Abu al-Rayhan al-Biruni (362-440 AH), born in the Khwarazm region in Uzbekistan, who is one of the greatest scientists of the Middle Ages in the ninth century in astronomy, geography, mathematics, and pharmacy.

The Olympiad aims to contribute to raising the scientific level of students in chemistry, discovering talents, developing, and refining students’ abilities, and helping them to identify their scientific orientations and determine their future goals.
