The Ministry of Education, represented by the Omani Federation of School Sports, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health, concluded the ideal weight challenge project. The closing ceremony was held under the auspices of HE Majid bin Said Al Bahri, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Education for Administrative and Financial Affairs, in the presence of Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Saadi, Director General of Financial Affairs at the Ministry of Education, a number of representatives of the Omani School Sports Association, representatives from the Ministry of Health, and ambassadors of the federation.
The project was launched as an experiment in 12 schools from the first cycle of education in Muscat Governorate. The project targeted students in the second and third grades, with a total number of about 200 students. The student, Lujain Al-Barwani, won the first place from the Ajyal Muscat School for Basic Education, Khalid Al-Maamari from Ghala School for Basic Education came in second place, and Nour Al-Bahrani came in third place from Al-Radwan School for Basic Education. At the general level, Al-Tibyan School for Basic Education won the Project Award.
On the project, Dr. Sulaiman Al-Shuraiqi, Senior Public Health Specialist, Head of Training Department at the National Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, said: “The idea of the ideal weight challenge project came after consultations between the Oman Federation for School Sports, the Omani Diabetes Association, and the Ministry of Health represented by the National Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology, and the Directorate-General of Primary Health Care, with the aim of dealing with the problem of obesity prevalence among school students. It was agreed to target the younger age groups due to their ability to change more and to inculcate concepts and healthy lifestyles.”
He added: “Obesity prevalence rates among students were investigated from the school health records, the size of the sample was determined initially (200 students), and it was found through survey that it could be obtained through the involvement of 12 schools from the Directorate-General of Education in Muscat Governorate as an experimental stage.
