The Ministry of Education, represented by the Citizenship Department at the Directorate-General for Curriculum Development, carried out a training workshop on “Mechanisms for activating the citizenship education document in the Ministry” in the presence of Dr. Yahya Al Harthi, the Director-General of the Directorate-General of Curriculum Development at the Ministry. The workshop took place at the ministry’s main office today (Wednesday) morning. in the presence of Dr. General of the Ministry.
This training workshop targeted (15) workers concerned with activating the document in the various directorate-generals in the Ministry's main office, the Specialized Institute for Vocational Training for Teachers, the Omani National Committee for Education, Culture and Science, and the Communication and Media Department. The workshop aimed at formulating mechanisms to activate the citizenship education document in cooperation with the directorates and departments of the ministry concerned with citizenship education and determining the time phases for its activation. It also aimed at raising awareness of the importance of the document as a reference for workers and specialists in citizenship education, which contributes to preparing young people, as well as strengthening the principle of partnership between workers in the Ministry and the Citizenship Department in relation to citizenship education.
The training workshop began with a welcoming speech delivered by Dr. Yahya Al Harthi, Director-General of the Directorate-General for Curriculum Development in the Ministry, in which he said: “Everyone is working to instill citizenship values within students. There are many efforts made at the level of curricula, supervision, training programs, and continuous follow-up in the educational field by supervisors, teachers, and school administrations, in addition to the efforts made in coordination with many educational authorities outside the ministry on citizenship. The ministry has sought to frame these joint efforts in one document, which is: “The Citizenship Education Document,” to clarify that citizenship education has several dimensions, fields, standards and outputs, which everyone should understand, agree upon, and practice in a professional manner, as the general objective of it is to raise generations and provide them with concepts, knowledge and directions related to citizenship education.”
He also added: “Citizenship education has “participatory dimensions”, so we, as specialized authorities at the ministry level, are trying to provide plans and directives and train both supervisors and teachers on the mechanisms for activating this document, but the greatest burden falls upon schools; being the executing and following up on the application of this document to make change in the behavior of students, and to educate them on citizenship.”
After that, Badriya Al-Mashrafieh, Head of the Citizenship Studies Department in the Citizenship Department at the Ministry, presented a paper on “Mechanisms for activating the citizenship education document.” The presentation covered several topics, including: clarification the objectives of the document, justifications for its preparation, and clarification of concepts and terms it contains, foundations on which it is based, its fields and dimensions, definition of the most important applications and means of citizenship education, the Sultanate’s experiences, and its regional and global experiences in the field of citizenship education, and definition of standards and indicators included in the citizenship education document.
At the end of the training workshop, several proposals were made on the mechanisms to activate the citizenship education document by the concerned authorities in citizenship education in the ministry and the participating parties in this training workshop.
